Each AWS Glasgow event pairs an expert-led specialty showcase with a hands-on workshop, giving students practical exposure they would otherwise not encounter until their surgical placements. Below is a summary of the flagship events we delivered this year.
24 September 2025
This is our largest and most acclaimed event of the year. Six consultants, each representing a different specialty, took to the floor to make the definitive case for their field, in a lively head-to-head format that had 100 students weighing up their options in real time. It has become the hallmark of the AWS Glasgow calendar.
Specialties represented:
Our Women in Surgery series is designed to give students an in-depth look at different surgical subspecialties, pairing each talk with hands-on training in the skills specific to that field.
Miss Sarah Gill and Miss Elizabeth Headon shared their expertise on building a career in orthopaedic surgery, followed by an in-depth workshop in external fixation and dynamic hip screw fixation, delivered in partnership with sponsor Zimmer Biomet.
Miss Catriona Douglas and Miss Yaneza May discussed their experience in ENT surgery, followed by a four-station masterclass led by Miss Thushitha Kunanandam, undergraduate simulation lead at the University of Glasgow. Stations covered peritonsillar abscess drainage, post-tonsillectomy bleed and tonsil ties, flexible nasendoscopy, and epistaxis management.
Miss Alison Bradley, Miss Judith Reid and Miss Carol Watson offered a candid account of building a distinguished career in general surgery.
2024/25 saw the launch of Battle of the Surgical Specialties, bringing together a range of consultants and trainees from across the surgical specialties to make their case to students for the first time.
The same year also saw the launch of our Women in Surgery series, covering six subspecialties: Orthopaedic Surgery, General Surgery, ENT Surgery, Transplant & Vascular Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
