AWS Glasgow is a student-led society at the University of Glasgow, established to support medical students in exploring a career in surgery. While the society is run entirely by students, it relies on the surgeons and trainees who give their time to teach, mentor, and speak at our events.
What we aim to do
- Role models. We invite consultants and trainees from across the surgical specialties, from neurosurgery to orthopaedic surgery, to speak, teach, and provide an honest account of surgical practice.
- Practical skills, not just talks. Many of our events include a hands-on component, giving students the chance to practise essential skills across a range of specialties.
- A structured path into surgery. Talks and workshops introduce students to a specialty, but our mentorship scheme, conference, and teaching series are designed to sustain that interest over the course of a full academic year.
- Partnership with the wider profession. We work with sponsors and royal colleges who share our aim of a more representative surgical workforce, and ensure their contribution is visible to the students who benefit from it.
Who we're for
Our events are open to medical students at every stage, from those with no prior experience to those preparing CST applications. The committee is elected annually by our membership, ensuring the society continues to be led by the students it serves.
